什麼是鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto?

鋸棕櫚是一種原產於北美洲的矮棕櫚植物,主要生長在佐治亞州和佛羅里達州的大西洋沿岸。

在相關的研究數據中顯示,鋸棕櫚的果實提取物中發現具有療效的活性成分。

引進台灣

台灣並沒有這樣的植物, 2004年【維髮健】發現國際上先進國家大量使用鋸棕櫚作為治療異常落髮成分之一。鋸棕櫚為天然植物萃取,可以改變以往使用藥物治療異常落髮的副作用,符合【維髮健】堅持引進最高品質且具有科學臨床實驗之產品,以天然抗落髮產品為本公司發展主軸,因而開始引進含有鋸棕櫚成分之產品。

但是,要進口含有鋸棕櫚成分的相關產品至台灣的時候受到重重關卡,因為鋸棕櫚這個植物在台灣並沒有生長,也因此衛生單位並沒有相關的資訊,在海關扣留產品一段時間後,【維髮健】透過各種方式向有關當局提出申請、申訴,但都被相關單位以無相關資料與權限而轉向其他單位,在不斷的來回周旋之際,最後在總統信箱獲得正面的回應,最終得以順利進口,也使得全台灣所有人民得以使用鋸棕櫚這個植物的天然作用。

使用非藥物,治療異常落髮。

別以為鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto是什麼新發現的天然寶藏,事實上,南美洲的印地安人早已於數百年前就使用鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto於傳統藥草中,用來改善攝護腺方面的問題。

而這藥草在歐洲早就被列為正式的處方藥達20多年,它的學名叫做Permixon,這是一種由南美的棕櫚樹果實(serenoa repens)中萃取出來的天然藥草產品,作用於攝護腺的機轉和目前有健保給付的Proscar完全相同,都是在於抑制5-alpha-reductase的活性。

但是它比Proscar更好的是:它進一步地抑制DHT受體與DHT之間的結合,因此,在療效上面比Proscar更有效果,比起先前所述Proscar的療效,鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto大約6周的療程就達到60%-90%的效果。

此外,它不會有Proscar的性無能方面的副作用。所以這個藥草在歐洲一直都是處方藥,在歐洲使用量比起Proscar更普遍,而且費用更便宜。

在美國發表於Current Therapies Research期刊的一篇報告說:「經過90天的療程,有88%的患者服用鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto而達到臨床上的明顯效果。」

而且,過去使用Proscar經常會使PSA(攝護腺癌特定抗原,一種用於診斷攝護腺是否癌化的血清指標)的檢驗值不準確,而服用鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto則完全不會有此缺點,使得攝護腺癌的臨床診斷更為正確。

另外一篇發表於Journal of Steroid Biomedical Molecular Biology的文章更報導了鋸棕櫚Saw Palmetto對於攝護腺癌細胞具有抑制效果,對於攝護腺癌的治療又開展了另一個新方向。

 

事實上,有許多天然的藥草對於某些疾病的治療效果比起化學製藥工業所製作出來的藥品其實有過之而無不及,而現代西方醫藥所使用的藥物也大部份都最早來自於天然物的發現。在中國與許多東方國家,傳統使用的藥草在治療效果上也都不比現代昂貴的新藥差;在歐洲與日本,臨床醫師使用藥草為處方藥是極普遍的事實。

這些天然製品雖然比較不受媒體青睞,但是它的藥效顯著而且價格便宜,並且通常副作用少而安全性較高,對於許多傳統藥草的價值,我們實在必須重新評估。
