LITERACY In literacy this week we will be beginning to look at the book ‘Millions’ to co-incide with the launch of our new topic ‘If I Ruled the World’. We will begin to get to know the characters, explore their motivations and try and look at the world from their perspective. We will then build up to writing a letter from the point of view of the children’s teacher. KEY VOCABULARY Blog, publish, informal, edit, open-ended, secure MATHS In Maths this week we will be looking at angles. We will revise how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles accurately, using these skills toconstruct triangles and pentagons. We will also investigate the angles formed by intersecting lines and consider how to calculate missing angles. MESSAGES Thank you so much to all families for supporting us last term with all of our activities. The children benefited greatly from all of your support. Now the weather is getting warmer, please could you encourage your child to bring in a hat and also a water bottle so that they remain well hydrated during the day. Our school librarians are in school until 4:30pm on a Monday and Tuesday. If, as parents, you would like to borrow books you can set up afamily account. TERM 3 ECA/BISCAP/BISS Lions Swimming: Programmes will begin on Monday 17 April and run until Friday 16June 2017. Confirmation letters will be sent out during the first week back. LITERACY We will be exploring the genre of information texts in Literacy. We will look at creating instructions for a range of different acticities, culminating in the design for a time machine! We will use this writing an opportunity to further our understanding of imperitive verbs. KEY VOCABULARY Instruction, time connectives, commands MATHS For our first week back we will be looking at negative numbers. This will involve adding and subtracting negative numbers and looking at problems using them in context, particularly with regard to temperature. We will finish the week with an investigation building number pyramids using negative numbers to reach a target. This week we will be concluding the play, looking at how the ending relates back to the witches’ prophesies and contemplating which characters are truly to blame for the tragic finale. We will use drama to get under the characters’ skins and consider the impact of the witches’ prophesies. KEY VOCABULARY Hurly-burly, heath, thane, fair and foul, rapt MATHS For our first week back we will be looking at negative numbers. This week we will be moving further into the play, encountering Lady Macbeth and investigating the complicated emotions and motivations that the characters share. LITERACY In Literacy this week we will be beginning a fantastic unit of work on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We shall then use this to begin learning about Act 1 of this wonderful play, where Macbeth and Banquo first encounter the witches and receive their prophecies. LITERACY This week in Literacy we will be continuing a series of lessons centred on persuasion. The children will be learning how to make the most effective language choices when trying to convinse an audience of their view point. This will be based around our water topic, with the children able to choose their topic for persuasion. We will be building a set of skills to enable the children to make a verbal presentation as persuasive and fluent as possible. KEY VOCABULARY Fact, opinion, persuasion, debate, reason MATHS This week in maths we will be continuing to explore decimals, fractions and percentages. This will involve first looking at multiplication and division of fractions. We will then look at how decimals, fractions and percentages are integrated and how to make quick conversions between them. The students will apply their knowledge of fractions from earlier in the year and consolidate this into problem solving abilities. KEY VOCABULARY Fraction, decimal, percentage THEMED LEARNING This term our new Themed Learning topic is water. This will be a unit that will involve a great deal of practical scientific investigation and the study of some challenging geographical case studies. In the next few weeks we will be looking at the issue of water scarcity across the globe and how communities overcome these challenges. We will also be beginning some scientific investigations into the properties of water. Other students will be using their art skills with batik to make a beautiful cushion. LITERACY In our third week of Literacy we will be continuing a series of lessons investigating information texts and how opinions differ from facts. We will be interrogating some high quality non-fiction books to discover how important our oceans are for life on Earth. We will then be using our sentence-level work to construct sophisticated sentences using colons and semi-colons to add to our information texts from last week. KEY VOCABULARY Fact, opinion MATHS In our third week of Maths we will be investigating volume and capacity. This will involve an initial study of how to differentiate between the two. We will then build up into a week of practical maths involving the practical applications of volume and capacity with a series of real-life investigations. We will use a range of resources and challenge the students with open-ended, high-ceiling problems. MESSAGES Wednesday 14th December- Christmas school lunch. Thursday 15th December- Pupils can come to school wearing party clothes for our classroom party. Thursday 15th December- End of Term 1 report issued. Friday 16th December- Last day of school. Now the weather is beginning to get colder, please send your child with a coat and/or school fleece clearly labelled with their name. Please do not send ‘hoodies’. Children may also like to bring a hat to keep their head warm, especially after swimming. Week beginning 27th March is International Week and we will have the International Day Parade during this week. As many of you may be returning home for the Chirstmas vacation we would like to inform you of this upcoming event. This advance notice may give you an opportunity to prepare any clothes from your home country for this special event. We will precede this with a revision of the four main operations and help the children build to making bigger and bigger calculations. This will be coupled with an investigative scheme of work using laptops and iPads to study how shelters were built to keep the population safe from falling bombs. LITERACY This week in Literacy we will be continuing an exciting unit of work on fan fiction. This is a genre where children can use their knowledge of characters and settings from their favourite books to construct their own stories. To support this we will be learning about ‘Story Mountains’ and looking at the punctuation of direct speech. This will build to the children writing their own stories to enter a Global Campus writing competition. This will first involve the conversion of units in base 10, from litres to millilitres and so on. We will then look at converting from metric to imperial units, using resouces from our cooking room.
