Nursing management’s Role in Burn Disaster of Taiwan water-park explosion injures- Experience of Extending a Plastic surgical ICU to Burn Care ICU

Background:

The demand for nursing staff is much greater than that for other healthcare professionals. This report of the response  of the CGMH to the disaster  that occurred in June 27, 2015, in” Formosa Color Dust Explosion”, 499 patients injured, 255 were classified in serious condition, that bringing the total 41 patients in CGMH. 28 Burn Unit beds (19 ICU, 9 Wards) has fulfilled in a large influx of burn patients.  We were facilities to augment to have 50 burn care beds.

This article describes the experience, switching the Plastic Surgical ICU (20 beds) to an extending burn care ICU to manage the mass burn injury. 

Material and methods:

The protocol including augmentation the nursing staff power, un-experience burn care staff training, infection control, Nurses’ responding to the related uninjured people of the patients, wound care techniques.

The senile experienced burn care staff, now service in other’s department or burn institute’s alumni were recruit as team leader. The junior unexperienced staff take one hour seminar and orientation before the duty, and combined service with the experienced staff.

Build the wound dressing change teams, staffed two nurses for off-patient dressing preparing, and two nurses for on-patient dressing changing. The team headed by experienced staff to training the junior staff during the practicing.

Protective infection control, door-checking the visitors for the adequate sterile gown, masking, antiseptic solution hand care, separation the contaminated area and uncontaminated area.

Consolation the uninjured persons related to the patients, explaining the treatment policy and declare the patients’ contemporary condition.

Check the daily demand with the resource provide department, prepare and augment the wound care material and infusion material.

Conclusion:

The program worked effective for 2 months.  The experience of the team treatment strategy, including the staff recruit and training could be feasible for the model of disaster management.
