The odd-looking Mary River turtle with strands of algae on its head, rocking the perfect punk hairstyle 😀.
The Mary River turtle is a large freshwater turtle native to the Mary River in Queensland, Australia. Some specimens can reach more than 50 cm in carapace length. A unique characteristic in the male is the tail which can attain almost two-thirds of the carapace length. Some individuals have vertical strands of algae sprouting from their heads, resembling hair and hence are sometimes informally referred to as the "green haired turtle". They are one of several species of turtle that can breathe using specialized glands in their cloacas (organs used for both excretion and mating). Thus, they are able to remain submerged for up to 72 hrs, however, they do surface to breathe air normally. Sadly, the Mary River turtle is listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List due to its rapid declines since 1970. Indeed, in the 1960s and 1970s, this species gained popularity as a pet in Australia, with about 15,000 eggs sold to shops every year during that time period.
