Hear the beautiful sounds of the aluphone, and meet its inventor, internationally acclaimed marimba soloist Kai Stensgaard, as he plays in the streets of Odense.

The aluphone is a new Danish musical instrument which has gained attention around the world, not least during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London, when it was played just before the flame was lit. On that occasion, it was played by the world famous percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, who was the engine behind Anders Koppel’s Concerto for Aluphone and Orchestra, premiered in Europe with the Odense Symphony Orchestra in 2014.

Today, the aluphone is played by musicians around the world across all forms of music, including indie, house, classical, rock, pop, jazz and rock.

The aluphone was designed by Danish musician Kai Stensgaard and engineer Michael Hansen, and is made in Denmark on the island of Tåsinge, off the south coast of Funen, at the Tåsinge Aluminium Foundry. The casted aluminium bells which make up the instrument were originally produced as aluminium caps for fence posts! Read more about the story behind the aluphone at www.aluphone.com
