Mollie's End of the Year Progress Report

Hi! We made it to the end of the year! The following is Mollie's reading progress throughout this school year.

February: She started out as an advanced Level 14, which is the level that many students are in the middle to end of first grade. This means she was above grade level! She is a very strong reader!

June: She is now at an advanced level 24 which is typical for the middle to end of second grade. My goal was for my students to be at level 14 or 16 because these are considered to be the transitional levels between first and second grade, so she exceeded that goal and is still above grade level in her reading! :) But like I tell all students, she must read a lot during the summer!

While she reads, it's important to develop the following reading strategies: predicting, identifying cause and effect relationships, being able to tell what happened in a story in sequence (sequence of events), identifying main idea and supporting details, and making a personal connection with the text. This is not a complete list, as there are many more, but this is something to start with. It helps to read with her, as this helps you gauge her progress and allows you to ask questions that challenge her to make a personal connection with the texts she reads. But of course let her read by herself often! Check out the Scholastic Book website when choosing books that are on her level or just above (for a challenge...but not too challenging, or she'll get frustrated!). The web address should be on the Class 1A blog.

**Special note: I talk about a "developing", "independent", "instructional" and "advanced" reading levels.

Developing means the student still struggles with the level and hasn't fully mastered it.

Independent means they've mastered the level, and can read independently in that level. This also often means that this is the perfect level for the student.

Advanced means that they've completely mastered the level and could probably be tested for a higher level.

Instructional is used for the levels in second grade, and means that the student has not completely mastered the level, and still needs much teacher support in that level.

I hope you have a GREAT summer, and I'll see you around next year!
