Summary: How to make bubbles Posted by: "Audrey Gold" [email protected] audreyhemphill Fri May 4, 2007 9:49 am (PST) Thanks for all the tips. I had googled "making bubbles" but was overwhelmed by all the information. I appreciated advice from experienced parents. Thanks, Audrey SUMMARY: Many people recommend Dawn dish washing soap with Glycerin (available at drugstores) or corn syrup added. Make the mix the night before for best results. One mom cautioned that Dawn can be dangerous to eyes. Klutz publishes a great book on making bubbles (and the have a fun little store Palo Alto near Calif. Avenue). I think I will continue to by Gymboree bubbles for playing with my babies and try the Dawn mixture for my toddler to play with in the yard. I also plan to get the Klutz book on bubbles. ORIGINAL QUESTION: My kids are having a lot of fun playing bubbles. We have been buying Gymboree bubbles which are great but expensive (especially when they get spilled). Is there another simple alternative available? Is there a particular brand of dish soap that works well? I welcome all suggests for bubble fun. ************ We bought a Klutz book on big bubbles (it comes with a huge wand for making 6ft-plus bubbles. There is a recipe in there for 1 part dish soap to 12 parts water. But you have to buy joy or blue dawn (I think it was blue?!). Apparently some 'recipes' for dish soap are better than others. I highly recommend the book – it also gives all sorts of bubbles tips. ********* Our preschool's recipe is: 2/3 cup Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (original version) + 1 T. liquid glycerine (Longs in Midtown used to have it, not sure if they still do) and enough water to make 1 gallon. I have found this recipe to be too watery. So, I usually start with 1 part Dawn to 2 parts water + 1 T. glycerine and then add water until it is a consistency that you like. ********* Target has a lot of interesting options and a large container of bubble soap which is not that expensive, imo. (note: I wander around the Target in Redwood City and did not find the bubbles) We purchased, among other things, the kind that has the long wand that you wave around (Rather than blow). I forgot the name offhand but can look it up if you are interested. It has a huge container of soap and makes the coolest bubbles (Big and small) and is a lot of fun. It's a bit different but my 3 year old was able to master it pretty quickly and loved it. There are also the no-spill ones that come with several bubble thingies. But blowing is a bit trickier, I think. ********* I bought a huge bottle of bubbles that I pour into the gymboree dispenser. It's lasted so long I can't remember if I got it at diddams or walmart. Have fun! ********** 1 part BLUE Dawn dishwashing soap 4 parts water 1/4 part clear corn syrup This works really well! (Warning: don't use corn syrup if you have a problem with bees or wasps in your yard as it may attract them) ************ be cautious when using soap for bubbles. Many dishsoaps are caustic and could cause severe eye damage (if the bubble pops and some solution gets in the eye) Avoid Dawn and other "grease fighting" detergents. A mom in RWCMC had a very traumatic experience with her son and homemade Soap based bubble solution. Poison Control gave her severe warnings - lil boy's cornea was spared but only because of the mom's prompt action. Gymboree bubbles are expensive but they are sugar based and WAY SAFE. ********** Dawn mixed with Glycerin. I found the recipe on line when my daughter had a Bubble Birthday party. You need to mix it up & let it sit overnight. ********* I have a giant bubble book and they recommend Dawn as the best soap. Also add a few drops of glycerin ( you can get it at any drugstore)- it makes the bubbles stronger.
