Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Step back in time – 135 million years ago – when dinosaurs roamed the Sahara Desert in Africa. GIANTS: African Dinosaurs showcases the African finds of world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno. Through this interactive dinosaur experience, visitors will learn about fossil discovery, be amazed by the art and beauty of ancient bones, and even search and dig for hidden fossils. Museum admission. $10/adult, $7/senior, $7/teen, $6/child. Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History 2559 Puesta del Sol Santa Barbara, California 93105 USA Lake Casistas Water Park for the kids 5 After 5 Splash Pass (12 months & under FREE) 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. $5.00 From the north (Carpinteria via the scenic route, narrow and winding in places): Take the 101 Freeway south to Carpinteria Take Highway 150 directly to Lake Casitas Camping in CARPINTERIA SB, CA Tidepools contain starfish, sea anemones, crabs, snails, octopi and sea urchin. Weather: 72F~55F Beach Hiking 1. The Carpinteria Bluffs are a piece of land that has been preserved from development by popular demand. Like the Wilcox (now called Douglas Family Preserve), local folks did not want to see the place developed so they raised money to preserve it. You can see lots of birds of prey, including kites, hawks and vultures. Small mammals like rabbits and foxes live on the bluffs, too. From the cliffs you can see a seal rookery and porpoises, otters and sea lions in the water. This beach hike is an easy walk along cliffs and along the beach. On much of the walk, the path is improved. It's pretty easy to make a mostly level 3 mile hike, but it's difficult to specify an absolute path to follow. People pretty much just walk along as they wish. 2. Ellwood Butterfly Grove For: Short, flat. Clump of Monarch Butterflies The best time to visit the butterfly grove is in winter, around December and January. It is not really a beack hike, or even a hike because the grove isn't on the beach and isn't very far from where you park the car. But, you can make a very nice, long walk out of it on the beach after you visit the butterflies, or if there are no butterflies to see. Best hours are mid-morning when the butterflies are waking up, evening when the owls come out and there is a nice sunset, and then any time in between. There is no mileage for this easy walk. ********************************* Solvang: Hans Christian Andersen Museum The Museum is located upstairs in The Book Loft Building ( 1680 Mission Drive) in Solvang. If you choose to go to Santa Cruz Island, the hike at Prisoner's Cove to Pelican's is more interesting, I think, than the hikes Scorpion Cove. Lists many of our best restaurants Wine Cask, Downeys, Ca Dario, Sage & Onion, Elements, Louie's, and on and on... As far as lodging, Prufrock's in Carpinteria, or the Biltmore 4 Seasons, are pricey but would be nice. ************************************** Kirk Creek Campground (805) 434-1996 This Family Campground is approximately 45 miles north of Cambria, CA and 60 miles south of Carmel, CA. Located on the west side of Hwy. 1 overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this campground is situated on bluff with fantastic views of the Big Sur coastline. The sites are spacious and have a picnic table, fire ring and pedestal barbeque. There is one trail providing beach access from the campground, or you can drive 4 miles to Sand Dollar Beach, the largest sandy beach in the Big Sur area. It is a very popular spot for surfing, fishing (fishing permits are required for those over 16), swimming, exploring, sunbathing, etc. The beach is dog friendly as long as they are on a leash and they are cleaned up after. Directly across the highway from Kirk Creek campground is the Vicente Flats trailhead leading into the Ventana Wilderness. Within a short drive many trails can be accessed for hiking, backpacking, bicycling, hunting and horseback riding. These trails offer a variety of experiences including water falls, groves of Redwood Trees, breathtaking views, meadows and streams. The sites can be used for tenting or RVers. All roads are paved, water spigots are located throughout the campground and there are flush toilets and sinks in the restrooms. From November to February whales are migrating up or down the coast and sightings from the campground are frequent. The temperature is mild year round with the average in the winter being 64 degrees. October-May is a great time to visit whether you are tenting or RVing and offers fewer crowds. Forest Service is enforcing the 2 car per site minimum at the campground. There are first come/first serve sites or you can make reservations up to 6 months in advance at www.recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777 ************************************* Hiking in Big Sur http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/ Henry Miller Library (831) 649-2855 Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Celebrates 75th Anniversary Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will celebrate its 75th anniversary as a state park on Saturday, August 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “County fair” type activities will be held in the Day Use parking lot, including community booths, old fashioned children’s games, educational displays about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), guided walks, campfire program and food provided by the Big Sur Lodge. We will also have displays about the recent Basin Complex fire. The local community and anyone interested in Pfeiffer Big Sur are invited to share in the celebration for one of the most beloved and popular state parks in California. This is also a great way to show your support to the Big Sur community after the impacts of the fire. Because the Pfeiffer Big Sur campground is full for the August 23-24 weekend, please come for a day trip on Saturday. There will be free day use parking for this event. For more information, contact Pat Clark-Gray: [email protected] or (831) 649-2855; or Sara Howlett: [email protected] or (831) 667-0528. PFEIFFER BEACH - Big Sur's most popular coastal access point, Pfeiffer Beach is hard to find if you've never been to it before. The trick is locating unmarked Sycamore Canyon Road. Here's a tip - Sycamore Canyon Road is the only paved, ungated road west of Highway One between the Big Sur post office and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Once you find the turnout, make a very sharp turn. Then follow the road for about two miles until it ends. Drive carefully - this is narrow and winding road. It is unsuitable for trailer traffic. From a large parking area at the end of the road, a short, well-marked path leads to the beach. Cliffs tower above this breathtaking stretch of sand, and a large arch-shaped rock formation just off-shore makes for some dazzling sunsets. ************************************* McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park NOTE: Portions of the day use area, including the McWay Falls Overlook trail, Partington Cove, and the environmental campsites will re-open for public use on Friday, July 25th. Parking in the main parking lot will be limited due to unstable slopes above one portion of the parking lot. All trails and areas on the east side of Highway 1 will remain closed until further notice. Due to the fire and a sizeable rockslide, the ADA access ramp to the McWay Falls Overlook trail will be closed until further notice. 0.5 to 0.75 miles each For most visitors, “Big Sur” is synonymous with popular Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Often overlooked is a smaller slice of Big Sur located ten miles south—Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. It’s a shame to overlook it. A redwood grove, dramatic coastal vistas, and the only major California waterfall to tumble into the Pacific are some of the park’s attractions. Big Sur Bakery and Restaurant The Bakery opens daily at 8 a.m. Dinner - Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30. Closed for dinner on Sunday and Monday. See the big meteor show while you can Annual Perseids hit peak early Tuesday; next year won’t be as good By Joe Rao Skywatching columnist Space.com updated 12:10 p.m. PT, Mon., Aug. 11, 2008 Every August, just when many people go vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower makes its appearance. It is also the month of "The Tears of St. Lawrence," more commonly known as the Perseid meteor shower. Laurentius, a Christian deacon, is said to have been martyred by the Romans in the year 258 on an iron outdoor stove. It was in the midst of this torture that Laurentius cried out: "I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well cooked, it is time to turn me on the other." The saint's death was commemorated on his feast day, Aug. 10. King Philip II of Spain built his monastery place, the "Escorial," on the plan of the holy gridiron. And the abundance of shooting stars seen annually between Aug. 8 and 14 have come to be known as St. Lawrence's "fiery tears." Viewing prospects In 2008, the Perseids are expected to reach their maximum on Tuesday. The time of maximum should be about 1100 GMT (7 a.m. ET) on Aug. 12, Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown report in the 2008 Observer's Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. If so, the timing is very good for meteor watchers observing before dawn in North America, especially in the western states. And that morning, the waxing gibbous moon sets around 1:30 a.m. local daylight saving time, leaving a dark sky for the following three hours. Take full advantage of that moonless period. Next year, a last-quarter moon will illuminate the after-midnight sky with its light and will hinder observation of the Perseids. Comet bits We know today that these meteors are actually the dross of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Discovered back in 1862, this comet takes approximately 130 years to circle the sun. And in much the same way that the Tempel-Tuttle comet leaves a trail of debris along its orbit to produce the Leonid meteors of November, Comet Swift-Tuttle produces a similar debris trail along its orbit to cause the Perseids. Every year during mid-August, when Earth passes close to the orbit of Swift-Tuttle, the material left behind by the comet from its previous visits rams into our atmosphere at approximately 37 miles (60 kilometers) per second and creates bright streaks of light in our midsummer skies. Comet Swift-Tuttle made its most recent appearance sixteen years ago, in December 1992. For several years before and after its 1992 return, the Perseids were a far more prolific shower, appearing to produce brief outbursts of as many as several hundred meteors per hour, many of which were dazzlingly bright and spectacular. The most likely reason was that the Perseids parent comet was itself passing through the inner solar system and that the streams of Perseid meteoroids in the comet's vicinity were larger and more thickly clumped together — hence the reason for the brighter meteors and higher-than-normal meteor rates. With the comet now far back out in space, Perseid activity has pretty much returned to normal. Meteor clumps A very good shower will produce about one meteor per minute for a given observer under a dark country sky. Any light pollution or moonlight considerably reduces the count. The August Perseids are among the strongest of the readily observed annual meteor showers, and at maximum activity nominally yield 50 or 60 meteors per hour. However, observers with a wide-open view of exceptionally dark skies often record even larger numbers on the order of 90 or even 100 per hour. But while 60 meteors per hour correspond to one meteor sighting every minute, keep in mind that this is only a statistical average. In reality, what usually is seen is what some have called, "the clumping effect." Sometimes you'll see two or even three Perseids streak across the sky in quick succession, all within less than minute. This is usually followed by a lull of several minutes or more, before the sky suddenly bears fruit once again. When and where to look Typically during an overnight watch, the Perseids are capable of producing a number of bright, flaring and fragmenting meteors, which leave fine trains in their wake. On the night of shower maximum, the Perseid radiant is not far from the famous "Double Star Cluster" of Perseus. Low in the northeast during the early evening, it rises higher in the sky until morning twilight ends observing. Shower members appearing close to the radiant have foreshortened tracks; those appearing farther away are often brighter, have longer tracks, and move faster across the sky. About five to 10 of the meteors seen in any given hour will not fit this geometric pattern, and may be classified as sporadic or as members of some other (minor) shower. Watching for the Perseids consists of lying back, gazing up into the stars and waiting. Perseid activity increases sharply in the hours after midnight, so plan your observing times accordingly. We are then looking more nearly face-on into the direction of the Earth's motion as it orbits the Sun, and the radiant is also higher up. Making a meteor count is as simple as lying in a lawn chair or on the ground and marking on a clipboard whenever a "shooting star" is seen. Counts should be made on several nights before and after the predicted maximum, so the behavior of the shower away from its peak can be determined. Usually, good numbers of meteors should be seen on the preceding and following nights as well. The shower is generally at one-quarter strength one or two nights before and after maximum. A few Perseids can be seen as much as two weeks before and a week after the peak. The extreme limits, in fact, are said to extend from July 17 to Aug. 24, though an occasional one might be seen almost anytime during the month of August. Toilet papering

Toilet papering is, as its name suggests, the act of covering an object (usually a tree, house, or other structure of similar size) with toilet paper. This is typically done by throwing numerous toilet paper rolls in such a way that they unroll in mid-air and thus fall on the targeted object in multiple streams. Toilet papering to form letters, shapes, and symbols has become increasingly popular. Toilet papering, also called TP'ing or Yard Rolling, has become a popular tradition in the United States, and usually takes place after the completion of a school's homecoming football game, as well as on Halloween, though it is not restricted to these dates in any way. It is often done in small groups, and these groups will usually target certain houses and toilet paper the entire yard. The mess is usually relatively easy to clean, but rainfall can cause the toilet paper to become soggy and sticky, making cleanup more difficult and troublesome. Toilet papering is not necessarily an act of vandalism, however in some states all around the United States, it is a crime and it also may cause one to go to jail. Although it is a crime in many states throughout the United States, such as Texas and Virginia, it is rarely enforced. Many people, especially those in small communities, allow their houses to be toilet papered on homecoming night and are not concerned with reporting it to the police. Many communities have experienced problems, however, with other activities that often accompany toilet papering, such as egging and creaming, which can actually cause serious property damage. As a result, toilet papering itself has been labeled in recent years as a dangerous activity, and many communities are tightening restrictions on it, ordering that stores not sell toilet paper to adolescents starting a week or so before the homecoming game, and making sure that police are actively scanning the streets on homecoming night to find potential toilet paperers and confiscate their materials. Yet toilet papering can be used not just to celebrate homecomings, sometimes toilet papering are used after graduations, along with the typical shoe polishing of cars. Toilet papering can be done as an initiation for a member of any sports team. It can also be done as a joke, or as a somewhat malicious (yet generally harmless) prank. Teachers, friends, school buildings, and other figures are popular targets for toilet-paperers. A notable example of this was with Ring of Honor wrestler Jimmy Rave, who fans would throw toilet paper at whenever he made his entrance. It is common practice for a group to TP a good friend's house on Black Friday as a show of deep respect for that person, often while the target is doing other Black Friday traditions, such as shopping or bowling. Also toilet papering can be a rite of passage. When a group TP's a person's house, it is that group accepting the person whose house is being TP'd into their group or circle of friends.
