(Inspired by Philip Pullman's 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' ) Lila handed her father the screw and he screwed the last nail in tightly with his scruffy, dirty hands. The two stood back to admire the newly made clockwork. Lila wound up the sparkly, beautiful bluebird and held it in her hands excitedly. It chirruped cheerfully and when it stopped, it started to flap it's wings sapphire like wings. "Drop it." her father said, trying to control his excitement but only succeeding in spilling his coffee. Lila stared at him, horrified about dropping the delicate, precious thing as if it were a crystal, but beautiful sapphire blue. Not daring to disobey her father though, she whispered something to the clockwork blue bird and sighing, she dropped it. But she heard no crash or sound of a spring bouncing out. Finally, daring to look, she saw the bluebird flapping it's wings to keep itself from falling quickly. The clockwork bird was actually gliding down because of the flapping wings! The house was filled with cheers. "This is the best one you've made! That's why today's the best day ever!". Her father chuckled and wiped his tears away happily. He hugged her tightly, "So will I be the one who makes this day perfect?" he replied joyfully, "I've been thinking about your studies," Lila fell silent, "and I've made a terribly big decision.....I'm going to teach you how to make clockwork!". The house was filled with cheers again. Clockwork magic.
The time is ticking, Hurry everyone! Don't do picking, Just take one and go! Pick up the speed, Do you want spare time? Stop fiddling with your bead, Or you won't get things done! The time is ticking, We're nearly done. We've done all the working, Now we can play!
Night time at the library, Is a real catastrophe! Hungry books and talking books, Quiet books and noisy books! Hungry books love sesame, Sesame words, don't let them see. Words fly in the air, whoosh whoosh, Librarian comes in, shush shush. Books everywhere what a mess, "We made a din," the books confess. "We'll clean the mess Quick! Quick! Quick!". They hear the clock tick, MORNING! A happy family comes in, so silent you could hear pin. No one imagined chaos, No body knew, no body knows...
"I can't look!" shrieked Dylan and he shut his eyes tight. Luke's mind was whirling and he couldn't think what to do. So, he shut his eyes like Dylan and hid behind his rucksack. The boat shook. His rucksack wobbled and fell on Luke's head. Slowly, Luke opened his eyes and saw two beady red eyes glaring down at them. Dylan was flicking frantically in a book about the Loch Ness monster, desperately trying to dodge the fishy breath of the it. Luke switched on his emergency torch and suddenly felt thankful that his mother made him bring his emergency rucksack. He shone the torch at the monster, not knowing what to expect. Emerald green scales glittered and the Loch Ness monster opened it's jaw, showing off his sharp yellow teeth. It's long thick neck curled around the boat and threw the boat back on land. The Loch Ness monster threw back it's head and gave a terrifying roar. Dylan trembled and tried to recite the speech he learned from the book calmly. "O' m..mighty one, O' powerful one, we b..b..beg for you forgiveness. We are sorry to have a..a..awakened you from y..your sleep. Now w..w..we shall leave you, s..so please go rest in p..p..peace.". Seeing Dylan struggle on his own, Luke tried to chant along, though he kept making mistakes as he had not learned the speech. Finally, the Loch Ness monster gave one last mighty roar and fell heavily into the dark murky depths of the lake, resting. A big cloud of smoke wafted up from the lake where the Loch Ness monster had fallen asleep. "Wow! He's big. I wonder what a baby monster looks like?" Luke asked picking up his rucksack and re-adjusting the straps. "That WAS a baby Loch Ness monster!" Dylan answered, brushing the dust off his Loch Ness book. Luke gasped in shock, "Lucky we met a baby one then. I wonder what an adult one looks like?" . Dylan was immediately reminded of that photo of the adult Loch Ness monster and he shivered, "You wouldn't want to know.".
Outside of my window, is a coal black crow. He stares at my earrings, it's just what I was fearing. My mum opens the window, and in flies a CROW! Bet he wants my bow! He throws out my new earrings, other crows are cheering! I fight him back angrily, he flies away so quickly! He pecks my hair, grabs my bow and glares! Doesn't he dare?! Outside of my window, are coal black crows, having a party, awfully hearty. There are my earrings! There is my bow! Melody
Chapter 1 "Look, Miss Bethy Wethy is practicing gymnastics again!" Charlotte sniggered as she and Gruella sauntered off in the other directon. Beth wobbled mid-cartwheel and fell to the ground. She clenched her fists and walked slowly towards Charlotte and her little gang. They chattered on while struggling with the latest make up. Suddenly, Charlotte froze while her group split up evenly on her both sides. "Hello. How are you? Not doing well with your make up are you?! Well, don't you dare mention even one bad thing about gymnastics!" Beth shouted, her neat hair slowly falling out of her bun. "Yeah? Well, you just mention one good thing about gymnastics!" Charlotte yelled back. The two girls both gave each other a death glare...DING DING. The bell sounded for the end of recess, it's ear-piercing ding broke the silence of the group. The teacher strode over and eyed Beth's uniform, sighing, she walked off. Beth wrenched her hair bobble out, letting her chocolate brown hair loose, and hissed, "You want to one good thing gymnastics? It makes people look better than others who have make up on." and with that, she threw her bobble down. Chapter 2 "You won't believe what Charlotte did today!" Beth exclaimed, flopping down on her peach pink beanbag that afternoon. She kicked off her dirty black school shoes and tucked a strand of her beautiful brown hair behind her ear and revealing her clean-ish, heart-shaped, delicate, little face. Her well-kept, shiny heart earings glistened in the sunlight. "Mmmm?", her mother answered, stirring the cake mixture halfheartedly. Beth immediatly started to complain about her day at Wilsford Primary. "Tara has been teased like this before. She said it was life!" Mrs Tweddle replied, carefully placing the cake mixture in the oven. "Really?" Beth asked. "Really." Mrs Tweddle confirmed. Suddenly, Mr Tweddle burst into the living room panting. "Switch on the Olympics dear. It's basketball now!" he panted, reaching for a drink. "Dad! It's rude to interrupt!" Beth exclaimed, but she still switched on the TV obediently. Chapter 3 The whole family squashed on to the sofa to wath the basketball finals to find that it had finished! Beth sat up when she heard the reporter announce that gymnastics was next. Her family slowly slipped away to finish their work but Beth didn't notice. Tara was on! Chapter 4 At the dinner table, Beth described each move that Tara had performed with detail. But neither Mrs Tweddle nor Mr Tweddle was listening! They were all busying their things while finishing off their spaghetti bolognese. Beth didn't notice once again, that they weren't paying attention. Chapter 5 That night, Beth brushed her teeth carefully and flossed it. Then, she had a quick, warm shower. Her hair was soaked and her fringe covered her face like a pair of curtains. Her clean hair smelt of lavenders and her fresh pyjamas smelt of home and roses. She lay down on her comfortable pillow and dreamt of herself becoming a strong gymnast like Tara Evans. She dreamt that noone could hurt her physically anymore. The next morning, she woke up to find her pillow was damp. 'It was a dream,', she thought, 'And I so wanted it to be real!'. The rest of her normal early morning snooze was spent on sobbing, her tears still streaming down her face, she got up and splashed her face with cold water. Afterwards, she made a vow to control her temper and let herself be strong like in her dreams. Chapter 6 Beth trained hard and soon was a teen. She was a qualified gymnast! She was strong like Tara. She was calm like Tara. She was a qualified gymnast like Tara. She hadn't been in the Olympics, not like Tara. Still though, she trained hard for her dreams to come true. Epilogue Beth Tweddle stood waiting for the music to start, her heart beating fast. She was in the London Olympics! From the crowds point of view, she was as cool as a cucumber. They watched in amazement as Beth Tweddle spun and cartwheeled, backflipped and frontflipped, jumped and leaped and finished with a smile on her face. This talented girl won gold medal! In the crowds, a familiar face was seen smiling and cheering, it was Tara Evans! It was Beth's dream come true!
'"If I were too paint the sky, I would never get bored. That's because the sky is constantly changing it's beautiful colours."' Mr Oakley(Tom, an old man) sighed. He remembered Rachel, his beloved wife telling him about skies and colours. 'Why did Rachel have to go?' he thought, sadly. He'll never see her in the world again. Tom gently touched the faded colours on the old wall. Plaster was peeling off and it made an awful mess on the tatty floor. He tried to leave Rachel's room to be, let nature do the room good, but, too often found himself cleaning it. But, Tom never repainted it. He never stayed out in his little garden to sit and gaze at the sky. No, that would be doing something that would easily remind him of Rachel's death. He would never talk or do something if it was connnected to Rachel's death. That day, 40 years ago, Rachel had carefully balanced a big pot of sky blue paint next to the clean hole in the ceiling that allowed her to climb down the ladder to get downstairs. What she didn't know, was that her cup of tea was beneath the pot of paint! The pot wobbled and it crashed onto her head! She immediatly lost her balance and fell from the ladder. Knowing that death was creeping to her head and heart, she smiled weakily and whispered, "To the garden. Please Tom." and she then let herself be carried to the garden. She took one last gaze at the beautiful sky and fell into a sleep she could never wake up from. Eversince that day, Tom had always been upset. The old grandfather clock ticked in Tom's dark room. He walked silently towards the window to check that the blackouts were fixed firm, because war was breaking out, and then he lit the new candle and sat down on his wooden chair. The candlelight showed up a few things like the matted carpet with a woven dog bed in the middle and a cotton quilt draped carelessly over the straw mattress. It wasn't the most comfortable bed. Tom picked up Rachel's tatty will and read it again, for the 5th time that day. It was Rachel's death day and his own birthday. 'Typical,', he thought, 'Rachel must hate me to want to die on my birthday,' though he knew that wasn't true, 'I'm 81 startin' now. Thas an awful old age for a man like me. Rachie's nearly 78.'. Tom smiled, and muttered to himself, "I won't do me no 'arm to sit out and look at the gorgeous sky for once." and walked slowly, with a woozy smile fixed on his face, towards the garden. As he sat down, all kinds of thoughts about the sky whirled in his head. He gazed lovingly at the sky, suddenly feeling tired. 'I'm so sleepy. It wouldn't hurt to take 40 winks in the back yard.' he thought, slowly shutting his heavy eyelids. Just like that, he died of old age and a bit of broken heart, during the war, with a smile on his old wrinkly face. Epilogue In his dream, some angels carried him up to heaven. There, standing in front of him, was HIS angel, Rachel. Tears welled up in his eyes and, soon, they came streaming out. The cleaners saw the puddle and hurried over to mop it up. "Rachel!" he cried, wiping away his tears with the handkerchief Rachel lent him. He swept her into a ginormous hug and kissed her joyfully. "I hope this dream will never end!" he exclaimed, examining the new silk pyjamas that Rachel was wearing. "It never will!" Rachel replied, smiling and rejoicing with him, "It's not a dream. I waited 40, nearly 41, years for you to come! Come along and paint the sky with me!" dragging him to pick a paint pot and then pulling him to a part of the sky where the paint was old. The two of them skipped of and, together, they painted a rainbow.
I am a Year 5 student now! Last Wednesday, I became a Year 5. Everything was new. The teacher, our class and even our classmates! For us, this is like a totally new year. But, obviously it's not a real new year. This is called a school academic year. Anyway, for every new year, you get a new teacher. This could be a new teacher or one you've had before. We've got a new teacher. She used to be Miss Yates but now she is Mrs Vokins! She is also our school Yr3&4 school gymnastics team teacher. When I was in Yr4, I got chosen to be in the school gymnastics team along with my friend Milly. Miss Kennedy is teaching Foxes I like Mrs Vokins and I will enjoy having her as my teacher(although she makes a big fuss about having to be extra neat). When we change year groups, we also change classrooms. In every year group, we have two classes. The Year 5 ones are Foxes and Badgers. Natalie, Maria, Briony and I are in Badgers whereas Milly and Anise are in Foxes(will explain separations in next paragraph). Our classroom is bigger than Foxes'. It has more space and a bigger 'Reading Corner'. Our classroom has got good cold drinking water that's delicious. I think it's the best classroom I've ever been in! Now, when it's the start of every two years, we mix the two classes together and so there will be some people from each class together in their new year. So, that's why, me and my friends have been separated as you can see in the paragraph above. So, I have made some new friends. We have voted for the new school council for our class, and, surprisingly, the girl that has the most votes(Kristen) used to be a Woodpecker(Year4) and the boy that has the most votes(Jaden) used to be an Owl(Year4)! I enjoy being in these new, changed for I have already made 5 new friends, Alice, Amy-Louise, Anjili, Ayler and Tharsha! I think I will love the rest of this academic year!
I think we should be allowed to have limited holidays during school days. Because we might have relatives/elders that are sick in the school days. It could be an important day for our relatives like their wedding. If an elder is sick in the school days, we should visit them. If we do, than we can help take care of them or help do things they can't do because they're ill. If we weren't allowed to visit them, they might forget to take their medicines, go shopping for new food. They might have to get up and pour water themselves and risk falling over or hurting themselves somewhere. We wouldn't want that! If it's one of our relatives wedding and they invited us, they would be happier if we can make it. Also, if we make it, we would be able to say congratulations and celebrate with them. If we didn't, not only would they be disappointed we can't celebrate with them, we would be too! They won't want to be disappointed on their wedding day!
"Last one upstairs is a slug!" Ariel (7)shouted as she raced up the stairs. "Hey! You cheated!" Marina(12) exclaimed as she chased Ariel, quickly overtaking her. Ash(10) and Flame(13) were down in the garden, swinging on the tyre swing. Silently, they listened to Ariel and Marina rushing up the stairs to brush their teeth. Flame and Ash were already finished. The smell of pancakes soon wafted past Ash's nose. "Flame! It's pancakes today!" Ash exclaimed, jumping off the tyre. Flame followed her, still in thought of the concert. She wondered how her sisters could be so cheerful with music competition FINAL the next day! That morning, when everyone(Marilyn(grandma)Ottalie(mum)Colin(dad) the sprite sisters) was sitting at the table Ottalie announced some news, "Today, I'd like us too relax. Don't worry about the music competition. You were good enough to get in the finals and me and your dad are very proud. Today, just chill.". The kitchen buzzed with excitment. Everyone was planning what games to play. Soon, when they'd all finished a delicious meal of pancakes and syrup with milk or, for the adults, coffee, everyone rushed off to entertain themselves. "Flame, Ash, Ariel! How about a game of Monopoly?" Marina suggested, eying the new board game on her bed. "Yay! Fabfantastic! Ash and Flame would love to too!" Ariel exclaimed, answering for them. "Chill, Flame. The competition's tomorrow. How about we play it in my room?" Ash said, grinning. The four of them ran across the landing to Ash's room. The day passed quickly and it was soon time to go to bed. Flame hadn't had the best day like all her other sisters had. She inhaled slowly and stared up at the ceiling, trying to get to sleep. Her ceiling was a fiery red, the other walls were white but at the bottom were beautifully painted fires with finely painted flames and sparks. The next day, the girls carefully put their instruments in the car. They had breakfast in absolute silence, everyone nervous and excited. The drive to the competition was slow and silent too. The girls got out of the car and carried their instruments out too. Mrs Sprite/Ottalie and grandma/Marilyn stepped out too. Mr Sprite/Colin went to park the car. Inside the church hall, Ottalie, Colin and Marilyn wished the girls luck and went to take their places. The Sprite Sisters hurried backstage to find they were going last! Time passed quickly, and soon, they were on. They took they're positions and started playing, suddenly, Ash's cello string snapped and it cut her face! They stopped playing and a lady came to fix the cello string and put a plaster on Ash's cut. They started playing from the beginning of the piece again. Soon, the audience was entranced. When a man collected the judges' score, he announced, "The winner of the 'Little Musicians' final are....The Sprite Sisters!"! The girls, their parents, their grandma, all went home happily!
*My mum is beautiful, she's lovely and kind. I know she's joyful, anyone can tell. She sometimes gets angry, but there's a reason. I tell her I'm sorry, then we are happy. My mum is so smart, she helps me with work. She really likes tarts, and makes them quite often. She sometimes is sad, and tells me the reason. It may really be bad, but we face it together. I think my mum, is the best mum ever. I just want to say, "Mum, I'll love you forever!" Mum When I curl up beside my mum, there are no butterflies in my tum. When my mum gives me a big warm hug, it feels much better than a nice warm mug. When she tells me "I love you!" I never wish for a line that's new. Now I think that that's my cue, to tell my mum, " I love you!"
At Halloween, two ghosts appear. One called Ho, one called Ha. They loved tricking people. One Halloween, the people got angry and thought of a plan. When the ghosts come trick or treating, they would shout "Trick!" and pour water on the ghosts. Soon they were soaked. "Ho! Oh! Ha!"

"Fine! I'm going to a different school on Thursday anyway! And guess what? It's Monday today!" Florence shouted. She stormed back into school. "Good afternoon Afra Neroy, German." Miss Alery said. "Guten Tag Miss Alery." Afra answered, sounding bored. "Good afternoon Flo Maguire, Japanese." "Hiya Sarah Alery!" Florence replied, snorting. "On your best behaviour please Florence. Also it's kon-nichi wa." Miss Alery boomed across at her. Flo nodded. The teacher droned on about work, "........work.......test next week...." 'What a world.' thought Flo. On Thursday, Flo was really sad and lonely but she didn't show it. After all, she had broken up with her best friend, Gingella/Ginger. At playtimes she would sit on her own thinking 'Who needs friends? They just leave you in the end." Time passed really quickly and soon, it was the end of the day and everyone knew she was leaving. Lots came up to Flo and said 'Goodbye/Tschus/Sayonara' but she didn't reply. Her parents had no idea that she was planning on leaving this school. Flo had booked this and visited the school by herself. She packed everything that belonged to her. It was a boarding school. She scribbled a note explaining everything and left a photo of herself. Flo opened a tiny bottle and dropped a tear from each eye into each tiny bottle and screwed the cork lid back on, leaving it on the table for her parents. She was a softie inside. She took her luggage down stairs to meet the cab waiting for her. 'Bye mum. Bye dad. Meet you when I'm older.' she thought as tears silently slid down her perfect heart shaped face. The cab drove further and further away from her house. At Osar High, she acted as snobbish, annoying and naughty as usual. She didn't want friends and simply ignored all those(just Natalie)who wanted to be her friend. She'd always say, "There's only room for for one. One only and that's me." One day, Natalie went to the cinema and happened to be watching the same movie as Flo and sitting next to Flo. On the way there they didn't talk to each other even though Natalie tried to start a conversation. During the movie, Flo had a think about being friends with Natalie. She told herself to let go of what happened between herself and Ginger and to move on. She made her decision and hoped whatever happens next is good. After the movie, she told Natalie, "I should let go. Let's be friends!" . Natalie ran about, whooping in delight. "There's always room for two. That's you and me!" Flo gladly replied and they skipped home. Together.
The whistle sounded with a ear-piercing shriek. Andy shook himself, concentrate, focus, he thought. He ran to the middle of the pitch, waiting for John to pass the ball at him. Andy watched the ball whiz past him, straight at Dave. He spun around hurriedly, and tried desperately hard to get Dave's attention by jumping up and down and waving his arms like mad. "What are you doing?! You must be crazy! You're embarrassing our team!" A voice hissed from behind him. Andy sighed, things were just getting from bad to really bad. Could they get any worse? Just then, jeers, laughter, "BOO!"s and whispering came from all around him. Dizzying, Andy tried to gain balance. Suddenly, a black and white blur came shooting at him. "Whah!". The thing hit his shin and he lost balance. Andy's legs tripped up and fell face first in a muddy puddle. Lifting his head with the last of his energy, he murmured, "Sorry I asked." and fell back, unconscious. Waking up in a hospital, he looked at the rest of his team, who were all crowding around him. "W..what happened?" "Umm..uh...you fell asleep, that's all. Oh, and we won the match!1-0." Andy grinned, could things get any better?

There once was a girl called Jill, she swam with an excellent skill. She swam in the sea, for people to see, then she asked for the bill. Melody, 'Swimming Jill' There was an old man in Peru, who dreamt he was eating his shoe. He woke in the night, with a terrible fright, to find that it was quite true! Anonymous, Anonymous There was a nice teacher in school, no one knew that she would drool! The secret was known, when she bit a bone. She thought she was big fool! Melody, 'Silly disguise' There was a good girl who was smart, she loved to play with a cart. Her marks then dropped down, and wore a BRONZE crown, she now never gets A+ hearts! Melody, 'Heart or cart?' 'Swimming Jill' is about a girl named Jill who earns money for her and her family by swimming in the sea and getting the bills for giving the amazing swimming shows. 'Silly disguise' is about a teacher who wears a sweet kind face but is actually not very well mannered. The school is for mannered people and so she will get fired. Drooling is not good manners and secret is known. 'Heart or cart?' is about a smart girl. Her love of playing with carts makes her do less homework and her marks go down. Instead of getting a gold crown, she gets bronze. So she didn't get A+ hearts(when someone praises you with all there heart) because that's for the A+ guys not B! She then had to chose between hearts or carts and it's obvious she chose carts.
