I almost didn't sleep on the plane. I don't know why. I used to feel comfortable on the plane but not these two years. Anyway, after a long flight, I finally got home. Vincent and Cookie were in the airport to pick me up. Home sweet home! PS: I hardly have jet lag, so will be working hard tomorrow. ^^ AND, this is the end of my diary of Vancouver Trip 2011. Michelle Photos for Week 4 -(2) *
It was a complicated feeling to me- leaving Vancouver for Taiwan. I missed home, but I knew I would miss Canada. My best Canadian friend Jeanette drove me to the airport. We chatted for an hour and had to say goodbye at last. We felt sad because we didn't know when we would see each other again. She is in a transforming period professionally and personally, so I wish her all the best. Ryan and Hazel took the bus and the sky train to the airport for me. When I had say goodbye to them, I guess they felt complicated too. Ryan drew me a picture for me to view if I miss him on the plane. He hugged me, and said, " I'll miss you!" to my ear, and he cried a little bit on Mommy's shoulder. Hazel's eyes filled when I hugged her and told her to be brave. I was a very strict teacher to both Ryan and Hazel these weeks because I want them to be fine in the coming two months. Well, dear Hazel and Ryan, I know you both will be just fine. Please enjoy your life in Vancouver and try to learn more! I love you! Michelle Photos for Week 4 -(2) *
We had a Farewell BBQ Party this afternoon. Before that, I went shopping one last time for I have a coupon to use. All the roommates prepared the BBQ together, and Stan grilled everything. It was quite an experience hanging out with these good people! Thank you guys! Michelle Photos for Week 4 -(2) *
We finally got a sunny day before I leave. It was so nice that we decided to go to La Casa Gelato, where there are more than 200 kinds of ice cream. I always choose the Black Sesame, and add another new flavor on top. I picked Lemon Fudge this time. Ryan chose Mango Fudge again. Hazel tried Lichee. All were so good. The sun shine was so good that we didn't want to go home, so we went to English Bay Beach. Ryan enjoyed the beach, the sand, the water and everything. I took a walk along the beach, thinking. I was haapy that the summer has finally come before I left. Michelle La Casa Gelato Photos for Week 4 -(2) *
I was still working on the summer plan for StoryCat the whole morning, and then went shopping vitamins and glucosamine for my parents. We went to the Walmart in Burnaby and then Costco in Vancouver, and finally got everything I wanted. I now AM ready to go home. Michelle Photos for Week 4 *
Stayed at home and worked for the summer plans. However, I made steak for Hazel and myself. It was good. There was the final Hockey Game on TV at night. We made some popcorns and watched the game with the roommates. The Canucks won. We came in late but happened to see that only shot just seconds before it ended. It felt awesome! Michelle Photos for Week 4 *
It's the last day of my bus pass for May. I decided to use it until the last minute, so we went to the Roots Outlet and the Wal-mart after we picked Ryan up. Hazel got a nice jacket for Ryan, but we both got nothing. I used to buy clothes from Baby Roots for Ryan. Everything we saw from Baby Roots section was still good, but we don't have babies anymore. Sigh! Then we totally forgot that Ryan had a class that evening in the Community Centre. It's an expensive course. Ahhhhh..... What a big loss! Michelle Photos for Week 4 *
Returned all the books and DVDs, and got some more back. I'm leaving Vancouver, so we decided to go grocery shopping for Hazel. It's not easy to go grocery shopping on her own with a boy. Michelle Photos for Week 4 *
Today we hung out with Keyon and his mom in Surrey. It was a good day! Check out the photots! Michelle Photos for Week 4 *
Keyon's mom invited us, so this is the first time we had a sleep over in Canada. So cool! It was very nice to meet a friend here! Check out the photos. Michelle Photos for Week 3 *
Actually, we couldn't decide how much time we should spend on the shopping trip to Seattle Premium Outlet because it's the Memorial Day Weekend Sale,Fri, May 27 -Mon, May 30, and we had a boy coming with us. That meant we needed to slow down and take it easy. I was planning to stay one night nearby if I could get a better price on the hotels on Priceline, but I didn't get any luck. After struggling for three days, we decided it to be a one-day shopping. We took the bus and the Skytrain and then the "Quick Shuttle" bus, and it took us 5 hours to get there (from house). One hour later than it was said on the schedule. Then it was just like what I expected. There were too many stores that I wanted to shop in and not enough time. However, I did get some good deals. I was happy enough when the day came to an end. I've got something for my mom, my dad, my honey, and my mother-in-law. Of course, I've got many for myself. Totally worth it! I checked the date of the weekend sale before I came to Canada, and I also printed out some coupons from the website. Maybe it was not just about luck. ^^ Michelle Seattle Premium Outlet Photos for Week 3 *
Michelle
It was a rainy day. I might had another cold so I actually wasn't feeling well. For Hazel, I still went to Aberdeen Mall with them, which is in Richmond. Ryan was excited on this new sky train route- Canada Line. Well, he always holds high interests on taking different kinds of vehicles. Also he was excited to find a lot of Chinese books in the book store. However, I don't think there are any good ones among them. What happened to 好想吃榴槤 and 一片 披薩一塊錢 and 小魚散步, and all the good picture books from Taiwanese writers? In a place that you can live only in Chinese, the kids deserve better picture books written in Chinese. Maybe I should start my Chinese story-telling career here? For me. Not many pictures for today, nor things to say. Headache all day. Sorry! Michelle Photos for Week 3 *
Jeanette and I finally got a morning to catch up with everything. Then it was just a typical stay-in day in Vancouver. Michelle Photos for Week 3 *
We had a date with Keyon and his mom, and had a wonderful time with them. To be continued..., please see the photos first~ Michelle Photos for Week 3 *
We have four roommates living in the same floor in this house, and we share the common area, such as living room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, dining room and so on. They are all very friendly. Today we finally got a chance to know each other more. I realized we are surrounded by Eastern Europeans. Jerry, our landlord, is a Czech. He has strong accent that only I can understand. I mean his English is very difficult for Hazel to understand. For me, I can only understand 60%- 70%. Others I have to guess. Stan, who is a friend of Jerry's son, is a half Czech, half Filipino. I thought he was originally from Vancouver, but he wasn't. However, he grew up in Vancouver. So everyone else here counts on him a lot. We consult everything with him. He's a very good person. And he's the one who told me Czech and Slovakia was called Czechoslovakia. Fero, is the handsome guy that I mentioned in the first diary. He's a Slovakia. He doesn't talk much. Today Stan invited him and us to a Dim Sum place to have lunch. It's Fero's first time having Dim Sum. He didn't seem to enjoy too much. Kasia and Artur are Polish couple. Kasia is very beautiful and we often talk to each other. She can make very good cinnamon apple juice. Smells so good! Artur's English isn't very well, so he hardly speak to us. Just having very basic conversations. Those are our interesting roommates. I've never met so many Eastern Europeans. Now I learn a lot about Eastern Europe. It IS some experience. Michelle Photos for Week 3 *
We were planning to have a picnic on the beach, but it decided to rain. We had no choice but canceled the plan. After staying at home and reading and doing nothing, we decided to take our lunch to Metrotown. We went to the food court sitting at the table beside the windows, and enjoyed the sky and the light, and we ate, and we read. Then we went to the book store for a little more reading. We stopped by some stores for a little shopping. Ha! That's not in our original plan, but you can't miss a good deal if you see one. That was our first of the long weekend. Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
Ryan had no school today, so I took him to the Champlain Heights Branch Library for the family story time. Then we went to Yaletown to meet Hazel for a little sightseeing in the afternoon. It's time to do some "tourist" stuff. We had our lunch at FHAT in Yaletown, and we bought some bread at a beautiful supermarket, which I first stopped by in 2002 and liked it all at once. Then I always go and buy something from it every time I'm near that area. Then we took the Aquabus to Granville Island, which is one of Ryan's favorite activities. He was very excited about it. The public market, the kitchenware shop, the hat shop, the book store, the stationary store and the kid's market are the places we go every time I visit Granville Island. It's so nice that they are always there. And I always go to "Go Fish" for fish and chips, and "Cheesecake Etc." for cheese cake with strawberries. They were as delicious as usual. I was very satisfied with the little trip this afternoon. Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
Today Ryan stayed in the Child Care whole day, so I got a day-off. Since I had a little cold, I didn't do much but rested. I finally opened a bank account- thanks to my American Express Credit Card. Ryan was very happy that he could spend a whole day in the Child Care. I don't know why he likes it so much, but it is a good thing. Ryan drew two big pictures for us. They were so interesting. One of them told us what he did in the Child Care: drawing, talking, eating, going to bathroom, playing... and so on. He actually used the word "對話" to express that he was talking to his friends. Hazel and I were surprised. That picture helped us to understand his life in the Child Care. Recently, he started to sound out all the words he'd like to write, such as: "I (heart) u, bud." (=I love you, bird.) "I (heart) u, danso." (=I love you, dinosaur.) "I (heart) u, alpa." (=I love you, airplane.) Those were good tries. It just so happened. I saw this kind of words written on children's pictures in the homestay many times before. Now Ryan started to do so. I am satisfied. Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
It was a sunny day again. Yeah! On this beautiful afternoon, we decided to have lunch on the patio of Vancouver Art Gallery. The servers there seemed much more friendly than before. I was satisfied. The food is still perfect! The sky, the maple trees, the birds are just as usual. We had a very good time there. Ryan drew some pictures and read some books. Finally he drew something different today. He's been drawing dinosaurs since he got Vancouver. There's a special "Let's Sing" program every Wednesday in the children's library, so we joined it. The librarian sings so well with his guitar. He gave every kid a shaker so they can shake and sing with him. That was fun! On the way home, we stopped by Costco to get some mushrooms and toasts. There was a Hockey Game tonight, so everyone was excited on the street. We got excited too. What a relaxing day! Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
The theme for every Tuesday in Explorers' Child Care is going to the family place. Kids listen to 30 minutes' stories, and play with each other there. Better yet, moms talk to each other and find their supporters. I was curious, so I was coming with them to have a look. The support systems for mommies in Vancouver is really good. The family place is one of them. Today it was crowded, because finally the sun came out after several days' raining. The children couldn't wait to play outside. One of the little girls cried, "Oh, no! Oh, no!" while her mom took her home. She was so cute. We met Hazel at the Skytrain station. We took the skytrain all the way to Wal-Mart in Burnaby for another rain-boots-hunting journey. I actually made a call for enquiry last night, so we FINALLY got one pair of boots for Ryan. Also, I finally had my favorite Chili in Tim Hortons for lunch. Everything is settled. Now I can enjoy my vacation! Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
Today is the first day of the family care for Ryan. We got there on time. The caregiver, Shafani, and her husband welcomed us. I stayed for an hour to make sure Ryan was ok, and also talked more about Ryan with the Shafani. Most importantly, I wanted to see how Shafani deals with kids. There, we met the other kids that she's taking care of- Daclan, Pippa and Reily. Well, truth is I think Shafanie seemed inexperienced, because she just opened this Child Care for several months. I guess she's getting used to it. However, she tries her best and she's really friendly, gentle and patient. The best part of this child care is that she takes kids outdoor twice a day, no matter what. Shafani's husband made black tea for three of us while the kids were having their morning snacks. The tea was really tasty! I didn't realize it was the famous ceylon tea until the next day. I felt lucky when I found out that. I picked Ryan up at noon. Because it's been raining for days, Shafani asked us to buy a rain jacket and a pair of rain boots for Ryan. They go out every day, even in rainy days, so those things are important. Therefore, we went straight ahead to Metrotown for shopping again. We got no luck on rain boots hunting. We spent hours and tried several stores, but they were all out of stock. Finally, we got an expensive rain jacket at a sports store (we were planning to get a cheaper one.) Everyone was too tired eventually. We gave up on rain boots. We went home and went to bed and hoped it would be a sunny day tomorrow! Michelle *This Child Care is not very close to what I want, but I guess we really don't have much choice at this time of year. Good, experienced teachers or caregivers seemed all unavailable. However, I am still very thankful for everything. At least, Ryan started to feel comfortable with speaking English. He opens his mind to the English speakers little by little. He's not so shy any more. This IS a good start. Photos for Week 2 *
Yesterday I got an email from the other family care, so we decided to visit them today. The care giver, Shafani, is from Sri Lanka, and she has two daughters. The husband and wife have moved to Canada for 12 years. They seem nice and neat. They have bathrooms, tables, chairs and stuff all made for children. We liked the environment. Shafani's English is good. Even though she has a little accent, I can see she's good at kids and she's patient. The girls are friendly. So I can accept that little flaw. She can take Ryan until the end of June, which is perfect. We soon decided to let Ryan go to this family care, and then go to summer camp in July. So we finally settled it down. I felt relief. It's not like I don't want to take Ryan full day, but I want him to be with kids, to have fun, to try to communicate in English. And also I REALLY need a little time to study and think for my teaching. That evening, we went swimming in the community centre nearby. I was expecting more free time next week to get some studio things done. Michelle Photos for Week 2 *
Michelle
Saturday morning. I still woke up on time- early 6:45. We went to the Central Library for a family story time, and also got some more books and DVDs for Ryan. Then we decided to stay indoor because it was raining. The best way to stay indoor on a weekend is going shopping. So we did. We took the little train in the mall and donated $1 each for charity. We found something in Winners, and also a good deal in Tommy Hilfiger (40% off the sale price.) We went slowly at the mall. We had a cup of coffee/ tea at starbucks. We had a relaxing day, went home late and went to sleep late. It's been quite a week! Michelle Photos for Week 1 *
It was a big sunny day. How wonderful! We all woke up with smiles. I had a feeling that this day would be a perfect day and we would have so much luck on finding the school. First we set out for the Montessori School, but it was closed. We stood in front of the school and waited and called the teacher, but got no response. So I decided to go straight ahead to the nearest library for the family time. We had luck because we met the handsome, cool and funny male librarian again. He was Ryan's favorite librarian last year. We didn't expect to see him this time, but we did. What a surprise! He must be very popular because the room was full. It WAS a great story time, and Ryan enjoyed it. While I was thinking about coming back every Friday morning for his story time, he suddenly told everyone that he'd got promoted and was going to transfer to the Central Branch. After the story time, we went to ask him if we had a chance to join his story time downtown. He said he won't be a children' librarian again. Oh! What a waste!!! There was another meeting and try-out with the other home care giver. Hazel went with us too. The house shocked me at the first sight. Then we had a talk with the care giver and we left Ryan there for two hours to see if he liked it. The care giver's two boys played with Ryan immediately. It let us feel more comfortable, so we decided to put it into consideration. There's a huge and beautiful playground near that home care, so we let Ryan play on it for an hour after we left the home care. He met a boy and started to play with each other. It was a "School Finding" day and we did get luck. Now we need to decide if it's right to leave Ryan there. It's REALLY a hard decision. >
